THE FRAGRANCE
Part of the Odyssey Collection: Chapter II Liberation
Delving deeper into the origins of perfumes, and the self, the Odyssey unfolds with Liberation. A two-part collection featuring Material and Boundless, this chapter represents the desire to return to oneself and find therein the keys to the essential. An awakening to the novelty of existence, this power-duo takes the sensual sweetness of vanilla and the ethereal power of frankincense and turns it into something much more visceral and primeval.

Material is a paradox - through materiality, it evokes immateriality, teaching us to look beyond appearances and that what matters is often unseen; an experience akin to standing in a grove and descrying in the sweltering shade a multitude of textures and manifold hues of wood, leaf and bark; all coming together into one.

NOTES
Top: Elemi oil, patchouli oil
Heart: Vanilla Madagascar absolute, benzoin resinoid
Base: Guaiac wood oil, oud oil, osmanthus absolute, frankincense resinoid, labdanum absolute, tonka bean absolute

It's definitely on the stronger side, I like it, but not sure if I would buy it myself.

Beautiful

I was intrigued by the notes, but was also concerned it night be a little too dark for my taste, but in reality it wasnt to dark or heavy at all. Despite the rich notes it still maintains a lightness that makes it approachable. A really nice resinous, sweet and slightly wood perfume. Mainstream enough to not be off putting. I think if you like most of the notes listed on fragrantica then you cant go wrong.

Not the Vanilla Bombshell I was looking for

For me, Material misses the mark as an exploration of vanilla, and as a tribute to Material Girl era Madonna.

Material is a quiet exploration of resins, patchouli and yes, vanilla, but the leathery and boozy aspects. It is devoid of sweetness, and both sillage and longevity are shockingly lacking, especially considering Amouage's historical powerhouse scents. Not to mention the cost. Had it been released as what it is, high quality natural materials that do not have the synthetic boost to provide projection or longevity...well I likely still would take a hard pass, but I could have appreciated the sample more. Having gotten interested on the premise of a grand exploration of vanilla, this was a complete disappointment.

Once I'd given up the ghost of a voluptuous vanilla bombshell, I was able to appreciate and enjoy the dry skinscent; Predominantly a leathery patchouli labdanum with benzoin after very brief boozy dry vanilla opening. Unisex, with a masculine edge. Many niche houses have done similar, with lower price tag.

This fragrance is a true masterpiece

Cecile Zarokian has created a symphony of scent that has so many nuances of development. This is the quintessential vanilla scent for all time. It explores every aspect of vanilla- warm, sweet, funky, leathery, ambery, oudy, it's all there.
