Amongst the transcendental woods of the 1800s, craftsmen from the Massachusetts Bay Colony built violin bows in the tiny towns of the Pioneer Valley. The shops were filled with old growth mahogany, burled maple shavings, amber pine rosin, aged walnut and the craftsmen’s unique, secret varnishes. An androgynous, full bodied scent, Bowmaker’s ether reek is subdued by supple leather and a variety of woods. Violin-varnish is a molten force, the multi-dimensional glue that holds this scent together. Mahogany is cherry-brown, a dense, fine-grained material polished to a warm glow by the dusty solidity of sparkling rosin. Maplewood is dry, a sturdy backdrop along with piney-fresh cypress. Tree resin is a final layer of gloss, containing all the different woods herein. Cedar’s smoke mimics the burn of bowstrings making music, while moss recalls the musician’s moist grip. Bowmakers is a quiet, humble yet remarkable fragrance, a detailed triumph of artisanal craftsmanship.
