A taut scent that feels like a cool, awakening splash of water. The citric trio of grapefruit, orange and bergamot sizzle with a zesty heat, but this tartness is quickly tempered by crisp green accents of coriander, clary sage and cypress. A tempestuous trio of black pepper, violet and ginger introduce a floral spice to our palate, a foreshadowing of headier flowers (jasmine, rose and muguet) that induce swooning. Before anything gets too romantic, geranium, saffron and cardamom sweep in to contain the heartland sprawl of No. 33, their citric-spice forming a bridge to the deep, acerbic qualities of the basenotes. The indulgent textures of amber, musk, vanilla and tonka bean are cut with the sinewy strength of moss, vetiver, tobacco and cedarwood. Cologne No. 33 is an artful study of how opposites attract and counteract one another. A splash of balance.
