Japanese Buddhist Temple

My Japanese wife caught a whiff of this fragrance, then came in closer to fully appreciate it. She suddenly exclaimed in Japanese, “That’s the temple smell!” Well done, D.S. & Durga.

For those familiar with Kyoto by COMME des GARÇONS, this is a more animalic/leathery take on a Japanese Buddhist Temple. Having lived in Japan for a few years, both transport me back to the temples I’ve visited.

Kyoto focuses more on the cedar, so it’s like being in the woods surrounding the temple as the incense wafts through the trees. On the other hand, Amber Kiso is like being in the heart of the main hall of the temple, where the scents of the aged structure and ancient artifacts and ritual objects all permeate throughout an enclosed space. Kyoto is ethereal and clean, Amber Kiso is mysterious and heavy.
