A ship of spice rocking on a sea of dark materials, Nanban has a quiet dynamism–like a lit match slowly tumbling through the air towards a pile of TNT. A modern, adventurous scent, the newest Arquiste is a penetrating vision of life at sea. Malabar pepper and Persian saffron form a rich yet metallic layer of spice afloat on a steaming cup of black tea, a midnight brew prepared in the galley by an unseen passenger. Make your way to the heart of this vessel, where a sloping wall of parcels looms. In the near dark, each package is a mystery. Smooth your fingertips over a teak lid and hear the soft pebbly shake of beans within (coffee) their rich, oily scent escaping into the air. Fondle the tooled leather pouch hanging from a rafter, it’s drawstring mouth agape. An incandescent mass of blossoms (osmanthus) lies within, their fruity brightness rushing up to meet your nose. A trunk of light, unpolished wood leaves a green, powdery smell on your fingertips (sandalwood) and inside piles of opaque resin emit a sweet, herbal reek (myrrh, frankincense, styrax). As you tour it’s treasures, the ship creaks quietly against the water; it’s cedar planked bow (varnished with copaiba balm) glints on the moonlit water. A fragrance that encapsulates a delectable suspense, Nanban is both luxuriant and edgy. Wear it and plunge into a voyage of discovery.

An absolute masterpiece: evocative, beautifully blended, softly radiant. Received my sample, ordered a full bottle as I can’t imagine being without such a stunning fragrance.

This opens as Murdock’s Black Tea, which I am very fond of, but soon the mellow smokey coffee notes bring you through to a dry down that is mostly leather, with coffee and myrrh smoke accents. I had sampled Arquiste some time ago, perhaps it is time to revisit? This is a slightly darker, cold weather friend. Very nice. Thumbs up.
