A minimalist comfort, Coal bears a soft, androgynous signature. Smoke (a red-pink phosphor of Sichuan peppercorn and pink pepper) floats through a forest of cedars. It’s nebulous form drips and drapes over creeks of iced mountain water that run, spice-infused, into the roots of bank-side papyrus and juniper. The sterling silence of these woods is interrupted only by an occasional, far off rumble; trains trucking coal down from the mountains trail a velvet soot that transforms all in it's wake. Trees dry to powdery shards of sandalwood, leaves deepen in scent, shading into patchouli, animals age into leather. An elegant profile on environments converging. Subtle, dry and barely sweet, Coal expresses the contradictions of modernity. Naturally man made.
