Jasmine snakes across a bed of camellias, it’s indolic body smudging clean-smelling camelias pinned beneath. In the opening tango of OPUS IX, animalism threatens to dominate but black pepper evens the keel of this naughty and nice act; before feral jasmine can run rabid, camelia’s bright light is reinforced by a neighboring couple that steal onto the dancefloor. Taut leather and grey guaiac wood plot a slower rhumba across their stage of beeswax the smokey wood purifying jasmine and leather’s flesh, the impressure of this. Upstage, at the final edge of Opus IX, an earth toned trio of vetiver, ambergris and civet form an alliance, and calmy offset the rivalrous action that precedes them. This addition to the Amouage library reads like a successful durational performance; though long-lasting, we are fully immersed in the action, in and out of the spotlight.
