A Tribute to Paris!
“I was in my teens when I first discovered Helmut Newton’s picture that made YSL’s Le Smoking iconic. The genderless-ness really made a big impression on me. With stark monochrome simplicity, Newton created a piece of iconography I still find myself influenced by. In the making of L'air Barbes I was strongly influenced by the androgyny in this picture. I also wanted to illustrate different sides of Paris. One element is the French movie La Haine from '95 that captures the mood of the Paris underworld, turning it into master art. The film reflects the rawness of the concrete alleyways, the ghetto and le banlieue that sometimes sports the artificiality of a science-fiction set. There is the glamour, the creativity, the vulnerability, the hopes and the dreams. The beautiful models that complement the streets of Sentier, busy with castings during the days, and the eccentric opportunists that riot in the grande apartments long after midnight. There are also elements of the areas Pigalle and Barbes – Rochechouart. Lair Barbes Is a tribute to Paris, capital de la mode.” – Johan Bergelin, 19-69 Founder & Creator
